Email Scam Alert
We have been made aware of criminal activity directed towards new students, especially those with visas and have had to interact with the Immigration Service. Students have been receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from the immigration service or an embassy.
These people can appear to know information about the student and have tricked students into revealing personal financial details including bank details and passwords. This information has then been used to steal money from the bank account or to persuade students to make payments.
The University of Edinburgh’s Student Immigration Service have information about this issue on their website:
If you are contacted in the way described above, or by email, and you are unsure if it is a genuine request, contact the University’s Student Immigration Service on 0131 650 9265 (Mon-Fri 9am -5pm) to help determine whether the contact is genuine.
