Assessments
Courses are assessed by a diverse range of methods that often take the form of formative work, which provides students with on-going feedback and summative assessment which is submitted for credit.
There will be a mixture of in-course and end-of-term assessments and you will be regularly informed of your progress and supported throughout by a team of experienced tutors and administrators.
In-course assessment includes participation in course discussions based on guided problem-based learning questions and performance in group activities, and/or submissions of short written works. End-of-course assessments consist mainly of essay-type assignments at the end of a course. The course work and assessments may differ according to each subject and are carefully designed to be the most appropriate methods for each discipline.

MSc in Data Science, Technology and Innovation
The MSc consists of 120 taught credits followed by a 60 credit dissertation. In order for students to progress to the dissertation, a pass of at least 80 credits with a mark of at least 50% in each course is required in addition to attaining an average of at least 50% for the 120 credits of study.
- This programme includes a compulsory course: Practical Introduction to Data Science.
In order to be awarded a masters degree students must have satisfied any requirements for progression to the dissertation as noted above and attain an additional 60 credits, by achieving a mark of at least 50% for the dissertation or project component. MSc in Data Science, Technology and Innovation – Medical Informatics Specialism
The MSc consists of 120 taught credits followed by a 60 credit dissertation. In order for students to progress to the dissertation, a pass of at least 80 credits with a mark of at least 50% in each course is required in addition to attaining an average of at least 50% for the 120 credits of study.
- This programme includes two compulsory courses: Medical Informatics and Research and Evaluation in eHealth.
In order to be awarded a masters degree students must have satisfied any requirements for progression to the dissertation as noted above and attain an additional 60 credits, by achieving a mark of at least 50% for the dissertation or project component. Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science, Technology and Innovation
The PG Diploma (PG Dip) consists of 120 taught credits.
- This programme includes a compulsory course: Practical Introduction to Data Science.
In order to be awarded the diploma students must pass at least 80 credits with a mark of at least 40% and attain an average of at least 40% for the 120 credits of study examined for the diploma. Please see the Taught Assessment Regulations link above for additional information.
Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science, Technology and Innovation
The PG Certificate (PG Cert) consists of 60 taught credits.
- This programme includes a compulsory course: Practical Introduction to Data Science.
In order to be awarded the certificate students must pass at least 40 credits with a mark of at least 40% and attain an average of at least 40% for the 60 credits of study examined for the certificate. Please see the Taught Assessment Regulations link above for additional information.
Postgraduate Professional Development in Data Science, Technology and Innovation
There is no formal progression or award for students taking courses for postgraduate professional development, as students may take a minimum of 10 credits and up to a maximum of 50 credits with multiple start dates throughout the year. It may be possible to transfer credits onto one of the programmes above upon successful completion. Please contact the Programme Administrator if you wish to discuss this option.
