Partner Event - Hearing (or not?) the Shape of a Drum

About this Event

In spectroscopy, one infers the chemical composition of celestial objects by observing the frequencies of radiation emitted or absorbed.   Analogously, one can ask whether the shape of an unseen vibrating membrane can be decoded from its characteristic frequencies of sound; in the words of Mark Kac: "Can one hear the shape of a drum?".

ICMS & Carolyn S. Gordon, Dartmouth University, will focus on Mark Kac's question, discussing positive results (for example,  no exotic-shaped drum can sound the same as a round drum), negative results (constructions of sound-alike 'drums' of different shapes), and open questions.
