Abstract: WebAssembly (Wasm) is a virtual instruction set architecture designed for portability, performance, safety, and formal rigour. After its initial release, it has seen wide adoption across diverse ecosystems, such as the Web, edge computing, distributed computing, mobile, embedded systems, and others. Recently, release 2.0 of Wasm was published, which represents a step forward towards a more comprehensive model of modern hardware and computation. In this presentation, I will give an overview of what’s new in this version and present the major new features that are currently in the making for upcoming versions. I will also provide some general insight into the goals and the modus operandi of the Wasm working group.

Brief Speaker Bio: Dr. Andreas Rossberg is an independent researcher and language engineer at the Max Planck Institute. Andreas was previously a Principal Engineer and Researcher at DFINITY Foundation, and a Staff Engineer at Google, where he co-designed the WebAssembly virtual machine and led the work on the V8 JavaScript engine for Chrome. Andreas was formerly a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute. WebAssembly and Andreas Rossberg won the 2021 SIGPLAN Programming Languages Software Award.
