Title: Graded Types for Fine-grained Program Reasoning

Abstract: In the 1970s, the notion of 'grading' appeared in analytic philosophy and logic as a way of making reasoning more fine-grained, capturing  'degrees' of necessity or possibility. Somewhat independently, grading has become a topic of interest in type theory and programming language semantics, with grade modal structures again providing a means of more fine-grained reasoning. In this talk, I will give an overview of this idea (both its past and present) and demonstrate the potential of this technique via our research language Granule: a functional programming language resembling Haskell which combines indexed, linear, and graded modal types (in various flavours). Lastly, we'll see how these ideas can be (and already are) incorporated into other languages and I'll put forward my vision for how graded types could be leveraged in mainstream programming in the future.

Brief speakers bio: Dr. Dominic Orchard is a Senior Lecturer in Programming Languages at the School of Computing, University of Kent and is also Co-Director of the Institute of Computing for Climate Science, University of Cambridge. His main interests are in logic, types, and semantics, but also how programming languages and systems can be better targetted to scientists. He received his MEng in Computer Science from the University of Warwick, and PhD from the University of Cambridge, and previously worked as a Research Associate at Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

The Tech Talk lecture series is a part of the Huawei Coffee House offering.
