Teams scoop equality awards

Teams from across the College have been recognised for their efforts in supporting the careers of women in higher education.

Four Schools have each achieved Athena SWAN awards.

The awards have been made by the Equality Challenge Unit, the national body that promotes equality in the higher education sector.

The University’s School of Health in Social Science secured a Silver award.

Elsewhere, the School of Law, the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Science, and the School of Social and Political Science were each awarded Bronze.

Top awards

The Roslin Institute, part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine,  received an Athena SWAN Gold award. In doing so, the Institute becomes one of only ten UK departments to hold the top award.

It is the second Athena SWAN Gold award received by the University – the first was awarded to the School of Chemistry in 2012.

Promoting equality

Edinburgh is one of 132 universities and research institutes that are members of the Athena SWAN Charter.

The Charter was developed in 2005 and open to any university or research institute committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in science, engineering and technology mathematics and medicine in higher education and research.

In May 2015, the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.

The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
