Gallery scheme supports creative talent

Five artists are taking up residencies at Edinburgh College of Art as part of Talbot Rice Gallery’s scheme to support new creative talent.

Scotland-based artists Jenny Hogarth, Sarah Rose, Rae-Yen Song, Eothen Stearn, and Mona Yoo are joining the University of Edinburgh’s contemporary art gallery as part of a two-year national scheme.

The Gallery is partnering with Edinburgh College of Art to welcome the group as part of the Freelands Artist Programme, which supports artists in the early stages of their career.

Creative talent

  • Jenny Hogarth’s work uses moving images and videos to examine the themes of perception, freedom and care in personal relationships. Ms Hogarth’s work often incorporates her own personal narratives as an artist and a mother.
  • Sarah Rose uses sculpture and sound works to explore different states and chance interactions. The Glasgow-based artist was an artist-in-residence at Little Sparta, created by artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay.
  • Rae-Yen Song uses a range of artistic concepts – including costume and performance – in their work. The artist’s practice is informed by family stories and memories of growing up in a Chinese household in Edinburgh.
  • Eothen Stearn’s looks at the intimacy of personal relations, the detail of everyday life, music, feminism, queerness and science fiction. Her practice incorporates sculpture, performance and sound.
  • Mona Yoo – who is based in Edinburgh and Seoul – uses sculpture, digital drawing and spatial installations to explore the human body within architectural spaces. Their work has been exhibited recently in Japan and South Korea.

National programme

The Freelands Artist programme is enabling four organisations in the UK to help 80 artists develop their artistic practise and career over a five year period.

Talbot Rice Gallery is the Scottish-based partner, with Sheffield’s Site Gallery in England, Cardiff’s g39 in Wales and Belfast’s PS² (Paragon Studios/Project Space) in Northern Ireland also taking part.

This is the second year the Gallery has offered the Residents Programme. Over five years, Talbot Rice will invite 20 emerging artists to take part.

We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to talented artists at critical stages in their careers. We are looking forward to working with them as their practice develops.

Tessa Giblin Director of Talbot Rice Gallery

This is an important and visionary programme, in which we’re proud to be involved, as it offers emerging, or indeed, re-emerging artists support at a critical moment, somewhere between the student experience of Edinburgh College of Art and the professional art world, in which Talbot Rice Gallery plays such an important part.

Prof. Juan CruzPrincipal, Edinburgh College of Art

The artists will be given financial, curatorial and technical support. Facilities at Edinburgh College of Art – such as workshops, studios, libraries and collections – will also be made available.

The Freelands Artist Programme is part of the Freelands Foundation, which was founded by Elisabeth Murdoch in 2015. Its mission is to support artists and cultural institutions, to broaden audiences for the visual arts and to enable all young people to engage actively with the creation and enjoyment of art.
