Brussels event debates future of work
The future of work will be the focus in the first of a series of University events focusing on key global issues.
Technology’s impact on jobs around the world will be discussed by experts at the Global Change Forum.
The event takes place in Brussels on Wednesday 24 January.
The event will focus on the radically different future of work that is being created by technology.
Impact of technology
The effects of connectivity, automation and artificial intelligence on employment and society will be explored.
Keynote speaker will be László Andor, formerly European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion. He will be joined by University representatives for a debate from 5.30 pm – 8 pm at Scotland Europa.
Professor Andrew Scott, Dean International Europe, will chair the event. Also taking part will be Professor Stuart Anderson, Deputy Head, School of Informatics, Dr Karen Gregory, Lecturer in Digital Sociology in the School of Social and Political Science and Professor Jonathan Seckl, Vice-Principal, Planning, Resources and Research Policy.
City Deal
The event will also focus on the University's role in creating a Data Capital of Europe, following investment from the UK and Scottish Governments into major infrastructure projects in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and the Borders.
The University is a key partner in the initiative which seeks to make Edinburgh and its surrounding region the European leader for applying data science to products and services.
European partnerships
Edinburgh has a wealth of successful partnerships in Europe. It is a member of several prestigious European networks including LERU, Coimbra Group and Universitas21.
In the past ten years, 30 per cent of the University’s research outputs were co-authored with partners in the European economic area.
The University has nearly 250 collaborations with 82 Belgian organisations which are worth approximately €76m in total.
Global Change Forum
The Global Change Forum events will focus on global issues and the impact that Edinburgh and international partners can have to influence positive change.
Events will develop research and teaching partnerships with leading universities. They will build partnerships with industry, engage with potential students and strengthen alumni engagement around the world.
Activities include business, government and academic research partnerships, industry, philanthropy and alumni engagement and student recruitment.
More events for 2018 are planned in Shanghai, London, Singapore, New York and Mumbai.
