Two senior academics in the College have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Greg Walker, Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature and Christina Boswell, Professor of Politics, join a prestigious group of 60 new Fellows who have demonstrated significant achievements in a broad range of fields.

This year’s cohort joins the current Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) Fellowship whose varied expertise supports the advancement of learning and knowledge in Scottish public life.

The 2017 Fellows also include HRH The Duke of Cambridge, Sir Paul Grice, Chief Executive of the Scottish Parliament, Sir Mark Walport, Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government and Broadcaster Kirsty Wark.

New Fellows are elected each year through a rigorous five-stage nomination process. The breadth of the Fellowship – which includes over 1600 individuals from the UK and abroad  –  enables the RSE to provide a wide range of leadership and expertise.

Edinburgh Fellows

Professor Walker and Professor Boswell join five other Edinburgh academics who have been elected as part of the 2017 group. They are:

Professor Timothy John Aitman, Professor of Molecular Pathology and Genetics and Director of Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine.

Professor Harald Haas, Professor of Mobile Communications.

Professor Neil Bruce McKeown, Crawford Tercentenary Professor of Chemistry.

Professor Elizabeth Jane Norman, Professor of Maternal and Fetal Health.

Professor Alexander William Tudhope, Head of School of GeoSciences and Professor of Climate Studies.

Each newly elected Fellow has been nominated on their exceptional and extensive achievements; it is a great honour to welcome such a range of outstanding individuals to the Fellowship. In joining the RSE Fellowship, they will strengthen the Society’s capacity to advance excellence across all areas of public life in Scotland and further afield.
