Event details

Lecture title: "Time"

Date: 12 September 2013

Venue: Martin Hall, School of Divinity, New College, Mound Place

Lecture abstract

The lecture considers how 'time' was understood and experienced in the early modern period. It discusses how, in Reformed protestantism, time gained fresh significance as a rich dimension of the sacred world. This reflects my interest in mapping out the 'mental landscape' of the people we call 'puritans'.

I use a wide range of sources - from the high reaches of theological tomes to the minutiae of private diaries. I draw on rare books in New College Library. The topic allows me to explore some key themes in my discipline with a general audience.
