The Dean of Undergraduate Studies is responsible to the Head of College for strategy and development in relation to Undergraduate Programmes, and for providing vigorous academic leadership for all matters relating to undergraduate education. His/her role is to develop sound strategic plans and policy for undergraduate education, and to drive through these plans and facilitate innovation and change. He/she must be able to contribute, in the context of the overall management of the College, to academic planning and decision making at external, University and College levels.

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies has responsibility for course and curriculum development and approval; convenes the College Undergraduate Studies Committee and is one of the three College representatives on the Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee. He/she also has certain Quality Assurance responsibilities, particularly in relation to External Examiners.

He/she is a member of various College committees, currently

  • the Executive Group
  • the Planning & Resources Committee
  • the Admissions Committee
  • the Undergraduate Studies Committee
  • the QA&E Committee
  • the International Committee
  • the Personal Tutor Committee
  • the ECA Accreditation Committee

The Dean will normally be one of the College's two nominated members of the ECA Academic Council.

The Dean convenes or is a member of various Working Parties set up by the Head of College or by CHSS (or Old College) committees. The Dean convenes a number of academic appointment panels on behalf of the Head of College.

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies provides expert advice on difficult matters relating to examinations and the University's Assessment Regulations, generally to Senior Personal Tutor. He could be required to act as Personal Tutor to certain international students, and to visiting undergraduate students. He/she is also an Authorised Officer, under the University's Code of Student Discipline.
