John Knox Symposium
Saturday 9 November 2019
Symposium 10:00-17:00, Celebration Dinner 19:00-22:00
About Professor Knox
Professor Knox was a remarkable man who obtained a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh in 1949 and a PhD from Cambridge University. He returned to a Lectureship at Edinburgh in 1953 and remained with us until his retirement. Many of us will remember him as an approachable, kind and supportive teacher. What we may not have realised is that he is also regarded as the most distinguished Physical Chemist of his generation in Scotland. He was a world authority in the field of separation science and a pioneer in the development of modern high performance chromatography. After his retirement, inspired by his love of sailing and a few ‘adventures’, he developed the AnchorWatch device and designed the ‘Knox anchor’ that is now commercially manufactured.
About the symposium
We are planning a day of talks spanning John’s life and scientific legacy with contributions from family, friends and colleagues and former students as well as current researchers at the forefront of developments in separation science. It is sure to be a fascinating day of reminiscing and learning more about a great man and his scientific legacy. There will also be the opportunity to have a tour of the building and learn about the wide range of research taking place in the School today. Attendance at the symposium is free, however to register your interest and help us plan for catering, please register online.
About the celebration dinner
A dinner for the Knox family, friends and alumni will be held on the same evening at The Prestonfield Suite, John McIntyre Conference Centre. Tickets cost £40 and include drinks on arrival and dinner. Places are limited for this special dinner so if you wish to join us please register online (using the above link) as soon as possible.
