General Council launches committee nominations

The official voice of the University's graduates is seeking members for its business committee, offering alumni the chance to get involved in the work of the University.

As a key part of the University’s wider community the General Council has, by statute, a governance role in matters affecting the wellbeing and prosperity of the University. A committee structure (covering academic, financial, international, constitutional and public affairs), enables elected members to engage with University staff and students throughout the year to remain abreast of a wide range of key matters e.g. ranging from student accommodation to key international partnerships. These committees report to the Business Committee which in turn ensures the General Council is kept informed, through its website, its publication Billet and half yearly open meetings.

A recent event showcased the University’s engagement with Africa. The next will provide an opportunity to learn about its work with robots and in artificial intelligence.

New members

The Business Committee is currently looking to recruit members from diverse backgrounds to bring their experience, expertise and, above all, enthusiasm, to engage in the discussion of these issues.  Each elected member is also invited to join one of the specific committees.

The role is intrinsically interesting and there are additional rewarding opportunities to engage in the life of the University community.

Edinburgh University Business Committee is great to join because there are a lot of recent graduates involved, and it’s been a great way to meet like-minded people that I didn’t know when I was at University, and to really understand what the University is doing in terms of building development and other strategies and plans that, as a student, you normally wouldn’t have access to.
