10 things for January 2020

This month's essential news, events and opportunities for alumni.

1. Alumni to gather for General Council event

1. Join us in the Bayes Centre

There is still time to book your place at the General Council Half-Yearly-Meeting and Lunch, which will be held in the Bayes Centre, Potterrow on Saturday 1st February. There is also a separately bookable tour of the Robotarium at 9.30am. The formal proceedings will begin at 10.30am and the event will be livestreamed from the General Council website (webcast tab). The University’s international alumni clubs have been invited to join us online to hear the Principal, Professor Peter Mathieson, give his annual report.

There will be opportunities for General Council members to submit questions for the Principal online at, as well as in person at the event.

The meeting is followed by a drinks reception and lunch in the Informatics Forum. The after lunch speaker, Professor Sethu Vijayakumar, will give a talk about the future of interactive robotics.

2. An opportunity on the University Court

Applications are now open for the new position of Senior Lay Member – a key role that will be responsible for the overall leadership of Court. Closing Date: 03/02/2020

About the University Court

The Court is the University’s governing body and is the legal persona of the University. Its present powers include 

  • the administration and management of the whole revenue and property of the University;
  • the regulation of the salaries of all members of staff; and
  • the establishment of Committees of its own members or others and the determination of the membership and the quorum of such committees.

3. Celebrate Burns in Sri Lanka

3. A Scottish night of entertainment in Sri Lanka

Time to don your kilt for an evening of Scottish food and entertainment at the British High Commissioner's Residence at Westminster House in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event takes place on Thursday 6th February.

4. Kickstart your business idea

Recent graduates - join our funded, intensive 'Edinburgh Innovations - Enterprise Foundation Programme' to get your business idea from concept to launch in just eight weeks! The programme will feature some activity you're familiar with, alongside tailor made events. Deadline for applications is 2nd February.

5. Landmark clinical trial seeks people with MND

Hundreds of people living with motor neurone disease are being invited to take part in one of the UK’s most comprehensive clinical trials in a generation. The UK-wide trial – called MND-SMART – aims to find treatments that can slow, stop or reverse disease progression.

6. New plans unveiled for Peffermill

Plans for a pioneering new sports complex have been unveiled by the University. Proposals will see the sports village built on the University’s existing facilities at Peffermill Playing Fields.

7. School of Social and Political Science celebration

On 12 February, alumni of the School of Social and Political Science are invited to an evening celebration to mark the launch of the Alice Brown PhD Scholarships. It will take place in ECCI on Infirmary Street.

About the Scholarships

The University is recognising Professor Alice Brown’s extraordinary contributions to academia and public service in Scotland by creating the Alice Brown PhD Scholarships. The scholarships provide essential funding and teaching opportunities for talented students who otherwise could not afford to pursue postgraduate study. Alice will be at the event for the official launch.

8. Latest thought-piece from the Business School

Ahead of their Strategic Asset Management for Transformational Impact course on 23 February, Professor Jake Ansell and Manjit Bains discuss how businesses can manage physical assets in line with their strategy in order to protect their reputation.
