O'Shea Global Scholars Initiative

The O'Shea Global Scholars Initiative advances Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea's work in expanding access to the University during his 15 years as Principal.

Sir Timothy has transformed the University in ways that have had a profound impact on our students. This has included expanding financial support for students so that we can attract the best students, regardless of their background.

The Initiative will further Sir Timothy's work by increasing local and global access to an Edinburgh education, as well as opportunities to develop a global perspective once here. We will do this through a range of scholarships that will bring people to Edinburgh, in person and virtually, and send Edinburgh students abroad.

These will include scholarships to study on campus, take online courses and benefit from an international experience, whether through internships, research, summer schools or exchange programmes.

Local and global access

The O'Shea Global Scholars Initiative aims to help the best and brightest students from Scotland, the rest of the UK and the wider world benefit from an Edinburgh education, on campus or remotely, through generous scholarship support.

Global perspectives

Edinburgh has been proud of its international outlook since its foundation, and the O'Shea Global Scholars Initiative seeks to give many more students the chance to have a rich experience abroad while studying with us.

Local and global access

  • Enhanced undergraduate scholarships to allow the most disadvantaged students in Scotland and the UK to study and thrive on campus at Edinburgh
  • Online Masters scholarships to allow promising students from around the world to study with us without uprooting their lives and leaving their families
  • Masters and PhD scholarships to attract the best and brightest from around the world to study on campus, regardless of their financial circumstances

Global perspectives

  • Travel scholarships to help disadvantaged Scottish and U.K. students and others, to study, intern, and research abroad and grow their international network

A fitting legacy

The University of Edinburgh is a driver of social and economic mobility. It is our aim that through greater provision of scholarships, enhanced support of students on campus and links with local and global communities, we can positively impact more students than ever before.

The Initiative aims to build a lasting legacy befitting Professor O’Shea’s impact on the University.

We are delighted to support this initiative in Tim's honour. Both of us benefited from generous financial support in our undergraduate years. We hope others will join us.
