The Carlyle Circle

Everyone who makes a personal pledge, such as a gift in a will, is invited to join the Carlyle Circle, and is invited to special events, receptions and lectures.

Carlyle Circle

The Carlyle Circle is a group of people united by a shared interest in the valuable work of the University.

Everyone who makes a personal pledge to the University, such as a gift in a will, becomes a member of the Carlyle Circle.

Thomas Carlyle was one the foremost thinkers and writers of his time.

As an alumnus and Rector of Edinburgh he knew what a profound effect his bequest would have on those working and studying at the University.

And so may a little trace of help to the young heroic soul struggling for what is highest, spring from this arrangement and bequest.

Will of Thomas Carlyle, 1867

Each member receives a certificate of thanks and is invited to special events, receptions and lectures held at the University.

In 1999, after deciding to support postgraduate students and their work at the University of Edinburgh, we informed the University of our decision. We became members of the Carlyle Circle and we’ve participated in various events which, together with communications with University staff, have given us confidence that we are supporting a worthwhile organisation.
