Special Awards
The Special Awards celebrate outstanding work and innovation from individuals and departments.
Innovation Award
This award recognises innovative projects and ideas that go towards fulfilling our environmental and ethical objectives.
This year’s award went to a group of students who organised a festival to inspire and empower young people in the Edinburgh community to find the ways that they can get involved. It was hugely successful with over 400 people attending the event in March.
ACT! A Festival for Social Change
Cutting Carbon Footprint Award
This award recognises individuals and departments who have taken measures to reduce their carbon footprint.
This year’s winner developed a plugin for Microsoft Outlook, which calculates the most sustainable routes to meetings. Prioritising walking, cycling, and public transport, including the King’s Buildings Shuttle Bus. This promotes healthier ways of travelling to staff, but in doing so, also reduces the carbon impact of business travel.

Best Energy Saving Idea Award
The Energy Saving Idea award encourages staff and students to share their own ideas about how the students’ association and the University could save energy.
This year’s winner tackled the major challenge of reducing utility costs in a research facility, home to large amounts of fridges and freezers. Controls were recently installed in the research facility, which will reduce power consumption and prolong the life of motors on the fridges and freezers.
