To advance learning on sustainable development, the University supported the successful bid to establish a United Nations Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development in Scotland.

Staff and students launched TEDx University of Edinburgh, hosting a conference in February 2013, bringing speakers from a wide range of disciplines giving informative, innovative and inspiring talks around the theme of Global Challenges, Grounded Solutions.
The University's College of Art was the first in the United Kingdom to adopt the All Walks ethos, encouraging student fashion designers to think about diversity by creating garments for people of all shapes and sizes.
Professor Mary Robinson, the first female President of Ireland and international advocate for human rights, delivered the 21st Century Enlightenment Lecture at the University, highlighting how human rights interact with the modern world.
