Sustainability

Internal engagement

As outlined in the University’s Strategic Plan 2012-2016, we aim to create conditions under which our students, staff and the wider community are inspired and supported to engage with and contribute to social responsibility and sustainability across the University and beyond.

Activities and events

As part of our Fair Trade Policy, the University, EUSA and student societies strive to organise a range of activities to engage students, staff and alumni in fair trade issues, in particular during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Students present Fairtrade Engagement Strategy at Scottish Parliament

Although the University of Edinburgh has held Fairtrade status since 2004, getting this message across and inspiring action and engagement from staff, students and societies alike can be a challenging task.

In January 2011, the students of Roger Sidaway’s Participation in Policy & Planning class were approached by the University’s Fairtrade Steering Group and took on the challenge of creating a strategy to raise the profile of Fairtrade and increase engagement with the initiative in the University.

At the invite of Green MSP Robin Harper, the Participation in Policy & Planning class delivered the Fairtrade Engagement Strategy to an audience at the Scottish Parliament in March. In the true spirit of engagement, the students incorporated an interactive segment into the presentation by inviting guests to contribute their own suggestions to increase engagement - such as a Fairtrade loyalty card, which have been incorporated into the finalised strategy, increasing awareness and engagement with the University's Fairtrade initiative.

Fair trade volunteers at the University

We provide volunteering opportunities for students through EUSA’s Volunteer Centre. Our fair trade volunteering roles provide educational, personal and career development opportunities.

A number of University staff volunteer their time to participate in Fair Trade Steering Group activities, and to take part in meetings such as those of the Fair Trade City Group.
