We have identified six BSL National Plan priority areas which will embed BSL across the University

 

Our Principles for British Sign Language Plan (2024-2030) 

  1. Increase BSL accessibility and inclusion at the University of Edinburgh. 

  1. Continue to build capacity to provide educational opportunities for BSL users at the University of Edinburgh and improve BSL opportunities in the Scottish education system. 

  1. Build capacity through employment opportunities for BSL users at the University and beyond.  

  1. Embed a cross-university approach to supporting the health and well-being of students and staff who use BSL.  

  1. Celebrate BSL culture at the University of Edinburgh.  

  1. Embed a cross-university approach to collecting, documenting, analysing, and reporting on BSL data at the University of Edinburgh.   

1. BSL Accessibility

A. Information and services in BSL
Principle:  We will increase BSL accessibility and inclusion at the University of Edinburgh. 

2. BSL Learning and Teaching

B.  Family Support, Early Learning and Childcare
Principle:  We will continue to build capacity to provide educational opportunities for BSL users at the University of Edinburgh and improve BSL opportunities in the Scottish education system. 

3. BSL Employment 

C.  School Education
Principle: We will continue to build capacity through employment opportunities for BSL users at the University and beyond. 

4. BSL Health and Wellbeing 

D. Post-School Education
Principle:  We will embed a cross-university approach to supporting the health and well-being of students and staff who use BSL. 

5. Celebrating Deaf Culture 

E.  Training, Work and Social Security
Principle:  We will embed a cross-university approach to celebrating BSL culture at the University of Edinburgh. 

6. BSL Data 

F.  Health, social care, Mental Health and Wellbeing
Principle:  We will embed a cross-university approach to collecting, documenting, analysing, and reporting on BSL Data at the University of Edinburgh.  We will use the data to enhance our programmes and services for deaf, deafblind and hard-of-hearing BSL staff and students, as well as for BSL learners.
