Cycling at night

How to ensure you are safe when cycling after dark

You must use lights

In the UK it is a legal requirement to use lights on your bike after dark. You can be fined up to £60 if you do not use lights. The Highway code states that at night:

  • your bike MUST have white front and red rear lights lit.
  • your bike MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1 October 1985.
  • white front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen.
  • flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.

Wear bright clothing

Bright coloured clothing helps you to be seen. Reflective clothing is even better. You do not have to invest in an expensive new jacket. Cheap waistcoats, tabards, or rucsac covers made from fluorescent and refloective materials are readily available from bike shops or online.
