Course description
This course explores the drama of the 17th century, first up to the closing of the theatres in 1642, and then from the re-establishment of the playhouses with the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 up to their radical regulation through the Theatre Licensing Act of 1737. The course focuses on the development of the major genres - comedy and tragedy - through this period; and on the contrasts and continuities between the theatre before the Commonwealth (1649-1660), and the theatre after that interlude.
