Travelling to the University

Ensure your visit goes smoothly by planning your journey in advance.

Train at Waverley station

By public transport

Travel by train to Edinburgh Waverley Station or by coach to Edinburgh Bus Station (formerly St. Andrew Square Bus Station).

The George Square campus is only about a fifteen minute walk from the stations. You may find our walking directions helpful - see the link below. Alternatively you can catch a bus from North Bridge or The Mound (beside the Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery of Scotland).

Alternatively, you may ask a taxi to take you to the relevant campus: George Square or the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (for the Medical School).

To check which campus you need to visit, see programme information.

Local buses

For adults, a single journey of any distance costs £1.50 and an all-day ticket, which allows unlimited journeys, is £3.50.

There are extensive roadworks in Edinburgh's city centre at present. The information below is intended as a guide. We recommend that you check the Lothian Buses website for updates before you travel.

Buses servicing the University include:

By car or minibus

George Square lies at the heart of Edinburgh’s city centre. As such, both on and off street parking availability can be very limited at this site.

We encourage visitors travelling by car to use the excellent park and ride facilities on the city bypass at Sheriffhall Park or Straiton Park, wherever possible.

Limited Pay and Display short-stay parking can be found at George Square and Buccleuch Place, but these fill up early in the day.

Long stay parking can be found at Castle Terrace, Princes Exchange, on St Leonard's Street or Holyrood Road.

Pay and Display parking is also available at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (for the Medical School).

By air

Edinburgh International Airport lies approximately six miles to the west of the city centre.

An express bus service to Edinburgh's Waverley Station leaves every 10 minutes and takes around 35 minutes. Fares are currently £3.50 for an adult single ticket and £6 return.

Alternatively, you can take the Lothian Bus No. 35 to Forrest Road. Journeys take approximately one hour and an all-day ticket is £3.50.

A taxi to the city centre from the airport costs around £25.

Left luggage

Please note that no left luggage facilities exist at the University. The nearest secure left luggage facility can be found at Edinburgh Waverley Station or Edinburgh Bus Station.
