Introducing MEng Electronics and Electrical Engineering

From low-power processors for mobile phone technology to heavy-duty power electronics for wind turbines, the design of electronic and electrical systems is challenging and requires a clear understanding of both the physics and the broader system in which it operates, necessitating teamwork and the determination to find ingenious solutions.

With advances in technology for medicine, efficiency in transportation, safety monitoring systems, surveillance, entertainment, wireless communications, manufacturing and computing, renewable energy generation and more sophisticated technologies for connecting generating capacity to the grid, to name just a few areas, electronics and electrical engineering lead where others follow.

Ties to industry

Our Industrial Liaison Board includes senior representatives from important electronics and electrical engineering companies and has influenced curriculum and programme development.

Accreditation

This programme is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Year 1

You will learn the fundamental concepts in electronics and electrical engineering that provide the basis for more advanced study in later years, including a project laboratory. This is supplemented by important mathematics allowing the engineering concepts to be properly explored and explained. There is also an opportunity to select from a wide variety of courses from across the University, allowing you to widen your interests.

Year 2

The broad area of electronics and electrical engineering is broken down in Year 2, so that you study a wider range of courses reflecting the types of engineering often encountered. You will study courses in analogue circuit design, digital system design, microelectronic devices, communication systems and power engineering. Alongside these courses are hardware project laboratories supporting the taught material and a practical course in software programming. Mathematics courses include some of the more advanced mathematical techniques necessary. Industrial Management is also taught so graduate engineers can be well prepared for all aspects of their future careers.

Year 3

The thematic areas developed are continued into Year 3. You will also learn about electromagnetics and control engineering. There are project laboratories in digital systems design, analogue mixed signal design and embedded software, and there is also a laboratory in electrical machines and another in control engineering. You will learn about the economic and technical aspects of supplying power in the Power System Design Group Project.

Year 4

You will continue to develop your skills in those themes where you have developed a keen interest in previous years by selecting from a range of option courses. Courses in bioelectronics are also available. At least one third of the year is practical, with some of the option courses providing additional practical experience. The highly motivational Group Design Project is multidisciplinary and you will be working with peers from other engineering disciplines to complete a design and report that mimics the way practicing engineers work together in teams. You will also begin your major project that will span Years 4 and 5. If you are undertaking an industrially sponsored project on placement, it will normally be conducted on the company premises. Students undertaking an internal project will work in the University.

Year 5

The ability to select courses according to interest is continued into Year 5, and again, many of the courses are dominated by practical project work. These courses are taken after the completion of the project. This phase of the project represents half of the year’s work, making Year 5 dominated by the application of learned knowledge to practical situations.

Our facilities

Lectures take place in the George Square area during the first year, and for all other years at the University's King's Buildings campus. You will have access to the University's libraries and engineering and computing laboratories. Study materials are available online.

Placements

MEng students have the opportunity to undertake a 6 month placement in their final year. During this placement, students complete their major individual project in either industry or at an overseas Research Institution/University.

Many students find placements with the companies in our scholarship scheme or through receiving a UKESF scholarship. These placements are competitive and the companies will interview you before selecting. Students also have the opportunity to source their own placement in a relevant company.

The School provides support to students seeking a placement and all placements advertised by the School will be remunerated.

Study abroad

You will have opportunities to study abroad in Year 3 through the University's international exchange programmes, including the Erasmus Programme.

How will I learn?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, projects and group work. In your final years you will dedicate more time to private study and will receive individual supervision with projects.

Both electronics and electrical engineering are vibrant and expanding parts of the UK economy where demand for graduates exceeds supply. There are many opportunities for well-qualified and creative graduates to enjoy stimulating and rewarding careers. For many students, their MEng company project placement leads directly to a career in the company.

  • SQA Highers: AAAA.
  • A Levels: AAA.
  • IB: 37 points with 666 at HL.

Minimum entry requirements

  • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S5 or AABBB/AAAB from S4-S6, with a minimum of BBB achieved in one year of S4-S6, to include Mathematics at Grade A, plus National 5 Physics or Engineering Science at Grade B.
  • A Levels: ABB in one sitting, to include Mathematics plus GCSE Science or Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology) at Grade B or 6.
  • IB: 32 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 555 at HL to include Mathematics. Diploma must include Physics or Design & Technology.

Entry requirements by country

For direct entry to second year the minimum requirements must be exceeded, including the following:

  • SQA Advanced Highers: AA to include Mathematics and one other subject, plus Highers at AB in two other subjects including Higher Physics, Engineering Science or Technological Studies.
  • A Levels: A*AA in one sitting, to include Mathematics and either Physics, Engineering or Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology), or AAA in one sitting, to include Mathematics, Further Mathematics and either Physics, Engineering or Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology).
  • IB: 38 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 666 at HL to include Mathematics and one from Physics or Design & Technology.
Other entry pathways

Entry to many degrees in Science & Engineering is possible via other qualifications (eg HNC/D, Access, SWAP).

You must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

English language tests

If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:

  • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
  • TOEFL iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
  • Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total 61 with at least 51 in each ""Communicative Skills"" section
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

About English language requirements

SQA and GCSE

For SQA and GCSE students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

  • SQA National 5 Grade C
  • SQA Standard Grade 3
  • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A
  • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C
  • GCSE Grade C or 4

Scholarships

Our Electronics & Electrical Engineering students are eligible for several scholarship schemes that provide additional financial support.

One scheme comprises a pool of scholarships provided by a number of companies, and the other is through the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF), of which Edinburgh is a member along with other UK universities which have a strong electronics profile.

Our applicants are also eligible to apply, during the year of application, for an Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Diamond Jubilee Scholarship, and can hold this in addition to other scholarships.
