Introducing MA Primary Education with Gaelic (Learners)

The MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic programme aims to support you to become a Gaelic-medium educator who will develop professional values of trust, respect, integrity and a commitment to the principles of social justice.

Based in the Moray House School of Education, you will have the opportunity to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of learning, of children as individual learners, and of the pedagogies associated with the primary curriculum.

Through extended and sustained professional practice in both Gaelic-medium and English-medium schools, you will develop professional expertise, knowledge of the curriculum in action and a critical understanding of the complexities of school and community.

Additionally, MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) provides you with the opportunity to study courses in Celtic (School of Literatures, Languages & Cultures) and psychology (School of Philosophy, Psychology & Language Sciences), exposing you to internationally renowned expertise in these subject areas.

Graduates of the programme are able to teach in Gaelic-medium or English-medium primary education.

Accreditation

The MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) programme is accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Upon graduation, all Scottish/EU and Rest of UK students are able to register with the GTCS as provisionally qualified teachers and guaranteed a one-year induction post in a Scottish school.

Year 1

You will study 40 credits each of primary studies, educational studies and Gaelic. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Year 2

You will study 40 credits each of primary studies, Gaelic and linguistics. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Year 3

You will spend a year at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, focusing on developing your Gaelic. You will complete An Cùrsa Comais, an intensive language learning course designed for intermediate level learners whose aim is to become fluent in Gaelic.

Year 4

You will undertake a year-long school placement which includes extensive experience of both Gaelic-medium and English-medium primary education.

You will experience a range of school stages and will develop professional skills and abilities to prepare for your induction year.

You will also study 20 credits each of primary studies and Education and Gaelic in Scotland during the year, coming back in to the University on specific weeks for classes.

Year 5

You will study primary studies, educational studies (including a dissertation) and Theory and Pedagogy of Immersion and Bilingual Education.

You will select an option from a suite of courses within the School of Education. Primary education courses include placements in schools.

Our facilities

Most of the teaching will take place at Moray House School of Education, located at the Holyrood Campus within the University's Central Area.

You will also have access to the University's libraries and computing facilities.

Placements

You will engage in placement – professional experience and practice – throughout your programme. In Year 3 you will undertake a year-long professional experience and practice placement which includes extended experience in both Gaelic-medium and English-medium primary education settings.

How will I learn?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, independent small-group activity and the use of e-learning and virtual learning environments.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a range of methods including exams, essays, portfolios and student presentations. You will be assessed by school staff and University tutors while on school placements.

Programme details (2017/18)

MA (Hons) Primary Education with Gaelic (learners) graduates typically go on to teach in Gaelic-medium or English-medium Primary schools. Further qualifications can be gained through part-time postgraduate study for those who wish to enhance their knowledge of teaching and learning and/or pursue leadership roles.

Typical offer

The typical offer is likely to be:

  • SQA Highers: AABB.
  • A Levels: ABB.
  • IB: 36 points (grades 665 at HL).

Minimum entry requirements

  • SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S5 or ABBBB/AABB from S4-S6, with a minimum of BBB achieved in one year of S4-S6. Higher English required (if English at Grade C, then Mathematics at Grade B expected). National 5: A language other than English at Grade B and Mathematics at Grade B. For alternative acceptable Mathematics qualifications please contact the Admissions Office.
  • A Levels: ABB including English or Mathematics. GCSEs: A language other than English at Grade B or 6, Mathematics at Grade B or 6, English Language and English Literature, both at Grade C or 4.
  • IB: Award of Diploma with 34 points overall and grades 655 in HL subjects including English. SL: Mathematics at Grade 5 and a language other than English at Grade 5. Standard Level Maths Studies is not accepted for this programme.

Please note that for degrees that have a subject requirement of a language other than English, students may not use their own native language to meet this requirement. In these instances, English or an alternative language other than native will be acceptable.

Entry requirements by country

You must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

English language tests

If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:

  • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
  • TOEFL-iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
  • Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

About English language requirements

SQA and GCSE

For SQA and GCSE students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

  • SQA National 5 Grade C
  • SQA Standard Grade 3
  • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A
  • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C
  • GCSE Grade C or 4
  • IB Standard Level Grade 5

Protecting Vulnerable Groups

All successful applicants will be required to join Disclosure Scotland's Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme before starting the programme. In addition, all applicants who don't live in the UK, or who have spent more than a year abroad, will need to provide equivalent verification from the relevant national authority.
