Opportunities exist in all our schools to undertake supervised research at either doctoral or masters level.

A full-time research degree entails supervised research, either on an individual basis or as part of a research team.

The aim of a research degree is to provide a thorough training in a particular discipline area through original investigation and experiment.

The precise focus of research is agreed between you and your supervisor.

Course duration

Students normally begin their programme of study in September.

Candidates for research degrees in certain subject areas may commence study at any time of the year.

PhD students are registered for three years, at the end of which they submit a thesis for examination.
MPhil students are registered for two years, and also submit a thesis.
Masters by Research involves research training, which may include following specified courses, followed by preparation of a dissertation. Registration on a full-time basis is for one year.

The University also offers part-time study opportunities.

Please note that immigration regulations state that international students must study on a full-time basis in the UK.
