Normally you require a good honours degree (UK 2:1) or its equivalent if outside the UK, in a relevant discipline. Employment or relevant educational experience will also be considered. Applicants whose first language is not English must also meet the language requirements set out in the College webpages. Evidence of relevant classroom TESOL teaching experience (two years' minimum) is required.
TESOL is a dynamic, challenging and fun programme that will improve teaching skills through greater professional knowledge and enhanced confidence. It is useful for EFL, ESL and TESOL teachers, teacher trainers, head teachers and materials/curriculum/policy designers. For those who are unable to study full-time in Edinburgh, the online mode offers a part-time study programme that can be accessed from anywhere in the world (with internet connection).
The programme aims to give participants the opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of TESOL. It offers the possibility of exploring methods of TESOL teacher education and supervision. It provides participants with the opportunity to upgrade their knowledge of language, methodology and curriculum design, focusing on learners' needs.
This programme will enable TESOL teachers to train other TESOL teachers; work in management of TESOL education; combine TESOL with Business and Information and Communication Technology (ICT); specialise in TESOL for Young Learners; and develop research skills. The MEd TESOL is also a good introduction to PhD or EdD.
On completion, participants should be able to appraise critically English language teaching practice, be able to reflect on their professional knowledge with regard to the appropriateness of its application in a range of educational contexts and be able to design, implement and evaluate substantial research or development tasks.
Overall, participants should be able to modify their own practice of TESOL and teacher education for TESOL in the light of developing theory and changing conditions in which they have to operate.
The MEd TESOL can be studied in contact mode (12 months full time or 72 months part time) or by online learning (72 months part-time), or by a combination of both modes (part-time; for this mode please complete the application for part-time study and when you have a confirmed place on the programme you can discuss your progression with the programme director). For groups of students it is also possible to work in structured mixed mode (20 months). All modes of study consist of taught components (lectures or online materials, face-to-face tutorials or online discussions, with weekly tasks and a final assignment) and a 12,000-word dissertation. For more information about the different modes, please see the further TESOL pages listed below under further information.
