Entry requirements

The deadline for applications to this programme is 30th June 2013.

Applicants require a good honours degree in an appropriate subject. Applicants must supply a portfolio of fiction or poetry: between 3,000-5,000 words of fiction (either short stories or a novel extract) or around 10 poems (between 200-400 lines in total).

Places will be awarded for one or other but if you are uncertain which strand to apply for, send a sample of both. Work in other forms, e.g. journalism, life writing or advertising will not be considered. A personal statement should outline writing history and interests.

Programme description

This three year, part-time, distance learning programme will develop both creative and reflective responses to fiction or poetry through practical and literary critical application. Consulting with established writers and discussing the work of peers, students will extend their creative and editing skills and their capacity for imaginative and constructive criticism.

Students will be taught through individual tutor consultations (5 per annum), asynchronous online writing forums (small groups, 3 per annum). In years one and two, they will take part in monthly, synchronous, online seminars in creative practice (delivery of which will account for time zone differences) as well as a subsidiary course in literary studies. In year three, supported by further tutor consultations and writing forums, students will work towards completion of the final portfolio of creative writing.

By completion of the course students will have:

advanced creative strategies and technical skills
addressed a wide range of questions relating to creative practice
extended editorial and literary critical skills
completed a substantial body of quality work
