Entry requirements

There are two deadlines for application to this programme: 1 December 2012 and 1 May 2013. Please note that places are limited so you are advised to apply early.

A UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent.

Programme description

This two-year Masters programme is offered by the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW).

The programme involves intensive Arabic language training and area-specific research training.

Eight months of the first year of the programme is delivered at Edinburgh. Pending successful completion of this year at Edinburgh, students will spend a further four months of intensive language acquisition in an Arab country.

After their return from that country, students will return to Edinburgh to continue with the second year of the programme.

Programme structure

In the first year, students will focus on the intensive Arabic language part of the programme through 15-20 contact hours per week. This will be followed by 4 months of study abroad at an approved institution in the Arab World.

In the second year, students will continue the Arabic language programme, enrol in research methods training and complete their dissertation.

Throughout the degree, students will combine seminar and tutorial work with essays, written and oral exams and research projects.
