About the School
Theology has been taught at Edinburgh since the foundation of the University in 1583.
Housed in the historic New College building near Edinburgh Castle, the School of Divinity occupies a commanding city-centre site on the Mound, overlooking Princes Street Gardens, the Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy.
Top-rated research
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 ranked the School first in Scotland and fifth in the UK for its research power in theology and religious studies. The majority of the research activity of our colleagues is classed as world-leading, reflecting the vibrancy of the School’s research culture.
Our research facilities
New College Library has one of the largest collections for theology and religious studies in the UK. We hold more than a quarter of a million printed items, including many rare and historic books.
We also have a large and rich manuscript collection, including the papers of:

- JH Oldham
- James S Stewart
The School has great facilities for postgraduates, including study rooms, kitchen facilities and a cafe for staff and students open during the teaching semester.
Choice and innovation
Our friendly community of 300 undergraduate, 150 postgraduate students and over 40 full-time academic staff includes internationally respected scholars in a wide range of specialisms.
We are one of the biggest centres in the UK for the study of religion so we can offer our students a wide choice of degree programmes and course options.
