Laparoscopy is a rapidly advancing minimally invasive surgical technique that has been developed particularly for ovariectomy and cryptorchidectomy (of abdominally retained testicles) in standing sedated horses.
This "keyhole surgery" allows a more rapid return to work than conventional open surgery techniques and removes the requirement for a general anaesthetic in most cases.
We have also used laparoscopy to provide information and collect intestinal biopsies in investigations of chronic abdominal pain and weight loss.
