Greater awareness of alternatives

The JMICAWE aims to achieve greater awareness of the use of alternatives to animals in teaching and research worldwide.

We are currently promoting a gold standard of animal welfare and ethics training within veterinary education at the University of Edinburgh and using our expertise to support the existing team who have for many years, ensured that the R(D)SVS promotes humane use of animal in teaching and constantly evaluate the current use of animals in teaching veterinary undergraduates.

The JMICAWE intends to distribute a ‘blue print’ for this gold standard to other veterinary education establishments throughout the UK.

We have also established successful working relationships with other faculties within the University, including the Roslin Institute and the College of Medicine. These partnerships will allow us to identify scientific priorities and explore barriers to replacement, and how they can be overcome.
