The Certificate and Master of Science (MSc) programmes in Surgical Sciences allow surgical trainees to gain additional qualifications.
This jointly awarded modular qualification is based on the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) curriculum.
It was launched in 2007 by the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
It enables surgical trainees to gain educational credits through part-time distance learning.
The Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification (ESSQ) leads progressively to a Certificate, Diploma or MSc.
Certificate in Surgical Sciences: 60 credits on the basic science relevant to surgery.
Diploma in Surgical Sciences: 120 credits, the taught route to the MRCS.
MSc in Surgical Sciences: 180 credits, including a research component, over a three-year period.
The MSc in Surgical Sciences allows surgical trainees to acquire a professional and academic qualification that signals their career intention.
The University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have launched a new part-time, two year online postgraduate programme leading to the degree of Master of Surgery (ChM) General Surgery.
