
Mr Paterson-Brown's main clinical interests relate to the surgical treatment of oesophagogastric malignancy and laparoscopic surgery, primarily related to biliary disease and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. He also has a particular interest in emergency surgery.

Mr Paterson-Brown was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon with a particular interest in oesophagogastric surgery to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in January 1994 and is also Chairman of the Patient Safety Board of the RCSEd.
He was the Clinical Director of General, Vascular and Urological Surgical Services in Lothian (2004-2008) and is a past President of AUGIS of Great Britain & Ireland.
Mr Paterson-Brown previously sat on the Education Committee and the Specialty Advisory Group for General Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is currently a member of council for the RCSEd. His current research interests include the staging and treatment of oesophago-gastric cancer, service re-design for emergency surgery, the assessment of surgeons and patient safety issues in surgery.
