Clinical interests
Professor Dunlop is a specialist colorectal surgeon with a strong academic research interest. He has a special clinical interest in colorectal cancer, surgery for advanced intra-abdominal malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disorders and intra-abdominal sarcoma.

Appointments and activities
Current
Professor and Chair of Coloproctology, Honorary Consultant Colorectal Surgeon 2000 to date. He leads a clinical specialist coloproctology practice treating elective and emergency patients with large bowel disorders. Through research interest with cancer families, a major interest in prophylactic surgery in genetic conditions for families identified by clinical or research. His major research endeavour is themed around the ultimate aim of reducing of morbidity and mortality from large bowel cancer through early detection and prevention. Current grant funding holds over £6 million and annual spend of approximately £800,000. Professor Dunlop has a major interest in elucidating the genetic basis of large bowel cancer and applying genetic information to prevent the disease as well as to understand disease causation. To this end, the Colon Cancer Genetics Group is investigating genetic epidemiology of known cancer susceptibility genes and translating this to preventative strategies. A further aim is to discover new genes responsible for large bowel cancer and to define their contribution to overall colorectal cancer incidence as well as define gene function in the context of cancer biology. As a parallel theme, his group is investigating the molecular basis of the anti-tumour effect of aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. He is a founder member of the COGENT Consortium that is investigating the contribution of common genetic variation to colorectal cancer. He has devised UK evidence-based guidelines for surveillance of genetically predisposed groups. He has multiple high impact research publications in colorectal cancer genetics.
