Clinical Interests

Mr Casey has a particular interest in laparoscopic surgery and performs laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and Common Bile Duct Exploration exploration, laparoscopic splenectomy and laparoscopic pancreatic resection.

Appointments and activities

Mr Casey has been a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh since 2003 and provides a service to both the transplant and general surgical services. They have active live donor renal and liver transplant programmes. He also performs endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography and contributes to the hepatico-pancreatico-biliary service in the unit.

He has principal research interest in islet transplantation and the potential contribution of stem cells to transplantation and he has helped establish an islet isolation facility in Edinburgh.

He has an active role in undergraduate teaching as the Year 3 Gastrointestinal module Organiser and he acts as Director of Studies for a number of students.

His undergraduate and initial postgraduate training were in Glasgow and he completed a PhD there in the Transplant Unit. Along with his colleagues he provides the Scottish national service for liver and pancreas transplantation and the renal transplant service for the East of Scotland.
