Kickstart Summer Programme

Kickstart is a week long summer school which is free to attend and is designed to provide a fun and useful taster of studying at University.

Registration for Kickstart 2013 is now CLOSED.

Kickstart 2013 will take place from Monday 15th July until Friday 19th July. Those who have been assigned places must return workshop choice sheet and parental permission form by MONDAY 10th JUNE.

What is Kickstart?

This programme is a collaborative project with the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University and Scotland's Rural College and is funded by the local councils in East, Mid and West Lothian for pupils in those areas.

The programme also includes school students from Dumfries and Galloway schools on a residential basis at Pollock Halls of Residence.

The aim is to give you as real an experience as possible (without the essays and exams!) and a deeper insight into some of the subject areas offered within Higher Education.

During the week, subject workshops are offered from two distinct areas - one focusing on Humanities & Social Science subjects, and the other on Health, Science and Technology subjects. Both programmes also contain a strong focus on the essential skills required to succeed in school, college, university and the workplace.

At the end of Kickstart, you should have a clearer idea about what you want to do when you finish school.

What happens during the Kickstart week?

During the week, participants will take part in five subject workshops (lasting around two hours each), chosen from a large list.

These workshops will take place in various university campuses throughout the city. Transport between campuses will be provided.

On the Wednesday, we will run a full day of exciting, fun and interactive university-style tutorials covering vital skills to help you succeed at university.

On the Friday, there will be sessions on how to get a head start in thinking about your university application, followed by a 'graduation'.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided each day, and participants can claim back the costs for travelling to and from Kickstart each day from their own schools. So it shouldn't cost you a penny.

To take up a place on Kickstart you must be able to commit to attending the full week.
