Applying for Financial Aid at the University of Edinburgh

1. Submit a FAFSA
Students wishing to apply for financial aid are required to complete a FAFSA. This can be completed on-line.
You can apply using the FAFSA on the Web from 1 January 2012. Apply early and ensure that your financial aid is all approved in plenty of time before the start of the new academic session.
On the FAFSA website you will find details on how to obtain a PIN number which will allow you to complete this procedure on-line. If you have applied previously you will be able to complete the Renewal FAFSA.
You will need certain documents in order to complete your FAFSA. Typically, these include you and your parents federal income tax returns and W-2s for the previous calendar year. A full list of the documents you will need can be found on the FAFSA website.
Include the University of Edinburgh's school code (G06839) in the appropriate place on your FAFSA for consideration for aid from the University.
Once your FAFSA is completed and processed it will generate a Student Aid Report. This is used by the University of Edinburgh to determine your eligibility for a loan as stipulated by the US Department of Education.
Please note students are required to complete a FAFSA each year. A Renewal FAFSA is designed for students who applied for aid the previous year. This can be completed on-line.
2. E-sign Your Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)
All students taking out a federal Direct loan outside the US are required to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) annually before the loan funds can be disbursed.
E- sign your federal Direct loan MPN on the studentloans.gov Web site using your Federal Student Aid PIN by selecting Sign-In. After you sign in, choose Complete MPN and then select Subsidized/Unsubsidized. Follow the four-step process listed on the studentloans.gov Web site to sign your MPN.

3. Loan Entrance Counselling
The U.S. Department of Education requires first-time borrowers of the federal Direct loan to complete a loan entrance counselling session before the loan funds can be disbursed. You can complete this online on the studentloans.gov web site.
This counseling session provides you with information that will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a loan borrower, as well as other tools to assist you with managing your loans.
