June to August

Prior to starting your studies is the ideal time to contact the Student Disability Service to ensure support for the start of your course.

Equipment loan can be arranged.

A Needs Assessment for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) can be arranged. Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) is extra financial help for UK students.


Matriculation (formal enrolment) at the University of Edinburgh.

Semester 1 begins

  • Contact the Student Disability Service if you haven’t done so before!


  • Needs Assessment sent to funding body.
  • Some take 21 working days to be approved, others take much longer.
  • If your Needs Assessment was done over the summer, you should have your equipment and tutor in place by now.


Exam arrangement deadline

You must have a Learning Profile in place in order to have exam arrangements e.g. extra time or use of a computer, coloured paper, etc.


Exams start in December.

  • Some Needs Assessments approved in 21 working days, others take much longer
  • Some students approaching Student Disability Service for first time might be too late to get adjustments for December exams!



New Year.

Start of Semester 2 teaching.

If you had a Needs Assessment in 1st semester, you should have all support in place.


Cut-off date for semester 2 exams is near.

Spring vacation starts


Exams start.


End of exams.

End of semester 2
