International Office

The International Office provides a support service to Colleges and Schools in relation to the advancement of the University's Internationalisation strategy and works closely with the Vice Principal (Internationalisation).

The Office provides a range of services to overseas students and undertakes activity in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America. and the University's network of overseas representatives based in the same regions.

The International Office also co-ordinates the activity of the University’s three international offices; the China Office in Beijing, the India Office in Mumbai and the Office of The Americas in São Paulo, Brazil. These liaison offices seek to support the University's strategic engagement with China, India and Latin America through the development of relationships and collaboration with leading institutions.

Alan Mackay, Deputy Vice Principal International and International Director

Has responsibility for the implementation of the University’s International Strategy working with the Vice Principal International and advising senior management on internationalisation.

His remit includes direction of the International Office and the University’s global office network across Asia, Latin and North America. He has responsibility for international partnerships and projects; recruitment; student mobility and exchange; student support and high level liaison with agencies and institutions within the UK and overseas. He has experience of educational projects and coordinating high level engagement and partnerships with a range of nations including the People’s Republic of China; USA; Brazil; Russian Federation and India and has worked extensively in the Russian Federation and the USA.

Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh (2001) he worked for the University of St Andrews and the Scottish Government. He has an undergraduate BA Honours degree in Public Policy and Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in European Policy and Law. He is a member of the Universities Scotland International Committee; Russell Group International Group; Universitas 21 International Directors Group; Vice Principal’s International Executive Group and the University Secretary’s Senior Management Team.
