Sports Union Membership

For students to participate in sport with the clubs at the University of Edinburgh, they must first become a member of our Sports Union:

Sports Union Membership

If you are interested in any of the Sports Union activities, you are encouraged to sign up for membership.

Membership ensures that we can contact you about news and events, enables you to sign up for clubs, intra-mural, EDex and SupportED.

As well as that, signing up to the Sports Union provides access to a reduction on Centre for Sport and Exercise gym membership.

Best of all, Sports Union membership is FREE and available to everyone at the University.

Freshers are encouraged to sign up to a club but if you are unsure of what club you would like to join please sign up to the SU and then make sure you sign up to your club prior to the deadline.

Failure to join an SU Club by October 18th will result in cancelled membership.

Club Membership

As the sports clubs at the University manage their own programme for the year and their own costs, they each charge a different rate of membership fee to their club.

Some memberships fees include the entire programme cost for a year so the fee you pay at the start covers you for the rest of term; others may require top up fees throughout the year on a semi 'pay as you play' basis.

It is important to clarify with the individual club what the membership provides and what it doesn't.

All memberships provide the following:

  • Insurance
  • Access to Sports Union funds
  • Access to preferential rates for facility usage

CSE Facility Fees

The CSE manages all of the University's sports facilities. This includes the indoor facilities at the Pleasance and St Leonards and outdoors at the Peffermill playing fields.

Those University of Edinburgh sports clubs that make use of the CSE facilities, must pay a facilities fee in addition to the particular fee that is set by each individual club to cover their own particular costs.

All sports clubs that use CSE facilities are assigned either high-use, medium-use or low-use status, depending how many hours the club trains for each week. In accordance with their usage status, sports club members pay an appropriate facilities fee.

High-Use Sports Clubs

Costs:
£104 (or £94* with SU Membership) - as this fee equates to the cost of full student gym membership, those in the high-use bracket pay their fee by paying for membership at the CSE gym at Pleasance.
What you get:
Full access to all the CSE facilities including Pleasance gym, swimming pool and club usage.
Who needs it:
Any member whose club has at least 1 weekly session at the Pleasance or more than 7.5 hours of training in any facility per week.
What you need to do:
To receive the offer take your SU Club membership confirmation to the CSE reception.

Failure to join an SU Club by October 18th will result in cancelled membership.

Access to facilities during pre-set training and competition times.

Ultimately, if you are a member of a high-use club, you will pay for gym membership at our CSE Pleasance facility. If you are a member of either a medium-use or low-use club, you can either pay your CSE facility fee each semester, or alternatively, if you are likely to make use of the gym facilities in your own time, you can pay for gym membership which will give you full access to our facilities and also include your facilities fee and no additional payment will be required.
