Information on the Gene Jury and the Scottish Initiative for Biotechnology Education (SIBE).
The Gene Jury workshops are a fun and interactive way for school pupils aged seven to twelve to explore modern bioscience and the impact it has on everyday life.
After games and activities to explain the concepts, children have the opportunity to investigate and discuss a variety of case studies and, as 'the jury', consider different attitudes and express their own opinion.
The use of individual personal response clickers allows the children to respond in a fun and anonymous way.
There are five different workshops available as well as a Gene Jury website with project information and resources for teachers and children.
SIBE aims to enhance engagement with biotechnology through interactions with the scientific community, school students, teachers and the general public. SIBE is based in the Institute of Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh.
SIBE recently produced a booklet ‘Think Darwin, Think Evolution, Think Now’ to celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.
This booklet has been designed for Scottish Higher and Advanced Higher students of biology and copies was sent to every Secondary School in Scotland . It also links in with attainment targets on the Higher and Advanced Higher syllabuses.
