External examiners

External Examiners play a vital role in maintaining academic standards. The responsibilities of External Examiners are outlined in the Quality Assurance Agency Code on External Examining, the University External Examiner Code of Practice, and University Assessment Regulations.

External Examiners for Postgraduate Research (PGR) degrees

External Examiners for PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research: the College of Science and Engineering has a dedicated Postgraduate Research wiki, including information on the examination of thesis for PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research.

External Examiners for Undergraduate (UGT) and Postgraduate (PGT) degrees

Nomination of External Examiners for Taught Courses

External Examiners are nominated by the relevant School, using the CSE External Examiner nomination form. All nominations should be sent to the College Office by the 1st of November.

IMPORTANT: in order to comply with UK Border Agency legislation, nomination forms must be accompanied by a photocopy of the nominated External Examiner's passport. Please see the 'Nomination to Payment Flowchart', below, for further guidance.

External Examiners - eligibility to work

All External Examiners must provide documentation demonstrating that they are eligible to work in the UK. External Examiner contracts cannot be completed without this check. This documentation should be collected by the relevant School and passed to the College Office.

External Examiner Reports for Taught Courses

The External Examiner Report Form should be used for all undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes in the College of Science and Engineering.

The External Examiner report form is located on the Academic Services website, under 'College of Science and Engineering.'

Fees

Fees are paid after the submission of the Report Form. Examiners should allow two months from the date of submission for the payment.

All payments are subject to a current employment contract and verification of eligiblity to work in the UK. A delay in receipt of these will result in a delay in processing any fee.

Expenses

External Examiner Expenses are dealt with by the School. Please send any expenses claims directly to them.
