Campus Catering

Students in Library Cafe

There are to be major changes to catering on the King's Buidings campus which, when fully implemented, will lead to substantial improvements in the range and quality of our catering facilities.

The Spot is being replaced by a cafe in the new KB Library development. The new KB Library Cafe is scheduled to open in August 2012 and will be similar to the highly successful recent developments in the James Clerk Maxwell Building and the Main Library in George Square. It will provide hot and cold drinks, hot soup, salads and sandwiches and pastries. It will have extended opening hours, to provide service to staff and students using the new Library in the early evening.

The space in the KB Centre currently occupied by the Spot is being converted into high quality, flexible student study space designed to support both group and private study and to complement the provision in the new KB Library. In order to complete the conversion in time for the scheduled opening date for the new KB Library/KB Centre facilities, the Spot closed on 17 February. We regret that this will lead to a short gap in provision, but this is unfortunately necessary if we are to avoid the severe disruption to users of the new KB Library/KB Centre facilities which would arise if the conversion work was extended into the first semester of next session.

We also plan to open two new outlets in summer 2013, in the Roger Land Building and in the current Darwin Library.

We will lose another of our existing outlets. Julie's in the Ashworth 2 ground floor will regrettably have to close on 30 June, when the whole of that floor closes for several months for refurbishment into new laboratory facilities for the School of Biological Sciences.

The other facilities at KB will remain. For those looking for something more substantial, the Upstairs Café in the Michael Swann Building will continue to provide hot meals, as well as lighter fare for those who just want a snack. Of course the EUSA facilities in KB House and JCMB will still be available.

The changes will have significant impact on some users over the next few months. By the time all the new facilities are in place, the services available to staff and students at KB will be substantially improved.
