Taught postgraduates

Welcome sessions and information on matriculation, visas, language tests, email and the other services available at the University.

Services for new students are provided by several different areas of the University.

Here you will find important information to review before you arrive. You will also find information on the services you will need when you get to Edinburgh.

Depending on when you access this information, it may still be for the previous academic year. Much of this will still be relevant, but please visit this page again for information specific to your entry year.

Introductory programmes

If you are starting your studies in September you should arrive in Edinburgh by Monday 13 September 2010.

This will give you time to take part in the various activities organised for new students during Freshers Week (13-17 September 2010).

The University and academic schools will be holding introductory sessions for postgraduate students during Freshers Week which are designed to welcome all new postgraduate students to the University.

The University will be also holding welcome sessions for postgraduate taught students on Tuesday 14 September 2010. Your school will contact you directly about individual programme welcome sessions.

Registration, matriculation and enrolment

Registry will send you University registration documents in late July or early August. You will need to complete these forms and return them in order to register as a student with the University.

For full details of the process and what we require of you please visit the matriculation section of the Registry webpage.

International students

Additional information is available for students coming to Edinburgh from outside the UK.

This includes a useful pre-departure checklist and an International Guide.

Information on visa processing times is available from the UK Border Agency.

Police registration

International (non-EU) students who are required to register with the police will have a stamp in their passport to indicate this is necessary.

If you are required to register with the police you must make arrangements to do so within seven days of arrival.

English Language Testing

The University conducts a Test of English at Matriculation (TEAM) as part of matriculation for all new students who have been required to show evidence of adequate English language skills (by means of an IELTS or TOEFL test certificate), and whose overall score was below 7.0 IELTS (below 600 TOEFL, or below 100 TOEFL iBT).

This test will confirm whether you would benefit from additional English tuition to help you succeed with your studies. If you do, this extra language tuition is free.

More information about TEAM, including special session run at the King's buildings campus, is available from the Institute for Applied Language Studies (IALS).

Code of Practice

There is a Code of Practice for postgraduate taught students that provides guidelines on good practice and set out standards which the University expects students to maintain.

The University assumes that each student will have read the relevant Code of Practice for his or her degree.

Student email

You will be sent a password for accessing the University’s computing systems and email along with your application for a University card.

You can therefore access these systems prior to arrival in Edinburgh. If you do not receive this information by post, please contact the Card Services Desk during Freshers week. Further details can be found on their website.

Please note that your University email address is the way the University of Edinburgh will contact you throughout your time of study.

It is very important you check this regularly or place a forward from this address to any personal email you wish to use.

The student experience

As we would like your time at Edinburgh to be as pleasant as possible we invite you to explore the other services available at the University.

There are still many rooms available if you have not found somewhere to live.
