The College of Science & Engineering (CSE), with nearly 2,000 staff, is one of the largest science and engineering groupings in the UK. The quality and breadth of CSE research has recently been demonstrated by our performance in REF2014.
Of our seven submissions, four of which were submitted as a joint research school in combination with a strategic research university partner through pooling, 3 were ranked top in the UK and all 7 were in the top 5 in their discipline in the Times Higher Power rankings, and over 95% of our staff were submitted.
This demonstrates a critical mass of world-class, fundamental research which spans the disciplines of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science & Informatics, Geosciences, Engineering, Mathematical Sciences and Physics & Astronomy. Together they provide the platform essential to the generation of single discipline and multidisciplinary research impact.
In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, 96% of the research was classified as being of international quality in its originality, significance and rigour.
We continue to lead the UK in Computer Science and Informatics, with 10% of the UK’s “world-leading” researchers being at Edinburgh.
The combined Schools of Chemistry at Edinburgh and St Andrews (EaStCHEM) has the largest volume of chemistry research in the UK and is in the UK's top five, as well as being the leading research grouping in Scotland.
As befits the leading Scottish research university, we have 42% of the world-leading scientists in Scotland.
