Legalisation & Verification

Here you can find out how to have documentation legalised for use overseas or certified.

Notarisation

The Registry is able to arrange that its documentation be formally notarised by a Notary Public. This service is only available in exceptional circumstances and is for one notarised copy. There is a charge of £10.00 to cover administrative costs.

Please contact us on 0131 650 2845 or by emailing Registry@ed.ac.uk to discuss your requirements, and to determine whether another form of verification from Registry will suffice prior to placing an order. Because of the nature of this service the process could take up to 2-3 weeks to complete.

Legalisation of documents and Apostille

If you are going to use British documents overseas, for business or personal reasons, it is possible you will be asked to have your documents legalised before they can be accepted. Legalisation is carried out by the Legalisation Office of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Registry does not provide this service.

Please view the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for guidance on legalisation of documents. Should you need to contact the Student Services Team please do so via email, fax (0131) 651 4066 or telephone (0131) 650 2845.

Research Council Application Forms

The Registry is happy to complete the verification of qualification section on ESRC forms and return them to ESRC but we do not hold enough information to complete AHRC forms. Contact your former Department for completion.
