The overall structure of PsySTAR is modelled on success with the SCP3, ECAT and STMTI programmes.
PsySTAR is not a 'standalone' PhD programme, but will instead recruit talented individuals at the start of their specialist training in Psychiatry and support them during year 1 to use their NHS-funded research time and study leave to optimise their PhD project.
The first year of the programme will give trainees an overview of research opportunities and time to identify a PhD project and supervisors.
Recruits will enter NES funded higher specialist training posts for the first year and use NES dedicated time - up to one day a week as well as three weeks study leave - to develop research training objectives and a PhD proposal.
Trainees will receive an induction course; education in and exposure to many research techniques; and a series of formal and informal meetings with a wide array of internationally leading basic and clinical scientists as potential PhD supervisors.
Years 2-4 will be spent as OOPE doing the PhD. Trainees will devote themselves to their PhD, with regular peer interaction and formal assessments.
Trainees will spend years 5 and 6 completing their clinical training as ST5 and ST6 grades.
PsySTAR will also provide the opportunity for ‘run-through’ training posts with a balance of academic and clinical training and prepare trainees for post-doctoral intermediate fellowships.
