In his post, Dr Moorhead is working on the development of MRI analysis methods for longitudinal studies of psychosis.

Background

After completing his HND in 1977, Dr Moorhead worked on avionics systems at Ferranti Defence Systems in Edinburgh. In this he advanced to become a Senior Instrumentation Engineer in the Electro Optics Research Laboratory.

After completing his MSc in 1995, he took up a post lecturing on Artificial Intelligence and instrumentation at Napier University.

In 2001 he completed his PhD research into low level vision processing employing novel sub-threshold complementary metal oxide silicon devices, and took up a Research Fellow post at Napier and worked on modelling novel amorphous silicon devices.

He took up his current post with the Division of Psychiatry in 2003.

Research interests

Dr Moorhead is involved in the development 3-dimensional machine tracing techniques designed to extract of information from MRI scans with a specific focus on the subtle variations brain morphology that can point to an increased vulnerability to the development of illness.

He has also been working on the implementation multi-spectral scanning. The current focus of this work has been on obtaining high-quality co-registration of structural, functional, perfusion and diffusion imaging. The multi-spectral work also includes MRI spectroscopy assays of brain metabolites.
