Andrew McKechanie is a clinical research fellow in the Division of Psychiatry.
As an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist with NHS Lothian, he works as a learning disability psychiatrist in central Edinburgh.
Dr McKechanie graduated in Medicine from Edinburgh University in 2002 and completed basic Psychiatry training on the North Yorkshire and South East Scotland training schemes. He was then Lecturer in Learning Disabilities in the Division of Psychiatry in Edinburgh prior to his current post.
Dr McKechanie's principal goal is to further our understanding of the nature of mental illness in the intellectual disability population, with the ultimate goal of aiming to improve the care and treatment that is available.
His interests span trying to expand both our knowledge of what may contribute to the development of mental illness in this population - for example through genetic studies - but also on more practical knowledge - what interventions can help when people with a learning disability require to access general hospitals?
The work of his current fellowship hopes to bring together the clinical, genetic, imaging and neuropsychological strands of Fragile X Syndrome to further our understanding of the condition. As a member of the Patrick Wild Centre for Research into Autism, Fragile X Syndrome and Intellectual Disabilities, he is also currently involved in a number of clinical trials of novel therapeutics in this population.
